Lair Assault: Attack of the Tyrantclaw - Character Creation

|
Our most skilled players spoke, and we listened. When they’re tackling the deadliest fights in 4th Edition, they want options. Unlike D&D Encounters and other shared-world campaigns, D&D Lair Assault allows players to utilize the entire breadth of the 4th Edition rules. Any legal character build of the appropriate level, using options from official Wizards products, is permissible in D&D Lair Assault. A great way to sort through the rules and make effective characters is through the Character Builder online tool available to D&D Insider subscribers.

Yes, that means all those books, both old and new, are resources for players to create the most deadly team of adventurers possible. They can pull out an old favorite from the Player’s Handbook, grab something from the latest releases like Heroes of the Feywild, or augment their options with rules from Dragon. If it’s a 4th Edition rules source printed by Wizards, it’s legal for play.

Gearing Up for Danger

Each D&D Lair Assault challenge will specify a level. The third D&D Lair Assault, Attack of the Tyrantclaw, is 6th level. Players bring characters of the challenge’s level to your scheduled event to participate. Characters higher or lower level than the challenge’s level are not allowed.

We use straightforward rules to equip characters for their deadly battles. Each character receives one magic item of one level higher than their level (level + 1), one of their level (level + 0), and one of one level lower than their level (level – 1). In addition, characters receive gold pieces equal to the value of one magic item of one level lower than their level (level – 1) to buy other equipment they think they’ll need. Each character may have no more than two consumable items (like potions or magic ammunition) equal to or less than the challenge’s level, and no more than one rare magic item. Note that players may equip their characters with magic items that are less than the stated levels if they so choose.

So, to use our 6th level example above, each character would have one 5th level, one 6th level and one 7th level magic item, plus 1,000 gold pieces to spend on other equipment (both mundane and magical).

A dryad named Hyacinth has recently learned of a ruined village called Tanaroa on the shores of the mysterious Isle of Dread. Now she hopes to land there and delve into the ruins of this long-ago society. She has chartered the Ravenstorm to the island and hired the crew to protect her. The job won't be easy, for a savage clan of orcs called the Tyrantclaw dwells on the island, along with great reptilian beasts.

Lair Assault: Talon of Umberlee™ - Background

|
About a month ago, Dagult Neverember, the Lord of Neverwinter, learned of an artifact called the Talon of Umberlee, which has the power to protect his city against threats from the sea. Lord Neverember hired a reliable privateer, Captain Szart Tilhavar, and his ship, the Floatin9 Cask, to travel along the Sword Coast to Waterdeep with a sizable purse and acquire the artifact, which had found its way onto the black market.

After paying an outrageous sum for the artifact and plotting a return trip to Neverwinter, Szart and his crew were set upon by Tidescourge pirates. The Floating Cask went down with all hands, but not before Captain Tilhavar used a sending stone to inform Lord Neverember of the attack and his misfortune.

Lord Neverember knows that the merciless Tidescourge pirates use Port Llast (a ruined settlement north ofNeverwinter) as a base, but he doesn't have the ships to mount a serious offensive. Instead he plans to send one ship, the Neverwinter's Pride, with a strike team ofadventurers as its crew. The strike team's goal is simple: snatch the Talon of Umberlee from its captors and return it and the Neverwinter's Pride safely to Neverwinter. In exchange, they'll earn Neverember's gratitude plus a generous payoff.

Players should create characters of 8th level, using any official 4th edition DUNGEONS & DRAGONS sources (print products available in stores or anything currently available in the D&D Character Builder, including material such as themes and backgrounds). Players can also use D&D Fortune Cards™ during the challenge.

Each character has the following treasure:

+ One magic item of 7th level or lower, one magic item of 8th level or lower, and one magic item of 9th level or lower. Only one of these items can be rare.
+ 2,600 gp to spend on other items, only two of which can be consumables. The consumables must be of the character's level or lower.
